Right Way to Change the Oil on Your Car

In the past, it was a rite of passage to change the oil on your car but it seems that most people bring their vehicle to a local garage. While there nothing wrong with that it every car owner should learn how to change the oil on their vehicle just to better familiarize themselves with how the vehicle works. You should not attempt this if your vehicle is still under warranty since that could void the warranty.

Selecting the Right Oil and Filter

If you refer to your owner’s manual it will tell you how much oil to add, what grade of oil and what type of oil filter to use. While you may be tempted to take an inexpensive oil filter you really should invest in a top quality filter. A good quality oil filter will keep your oil clean and your engine running properly for quite some time to come.

When you have purchased the oil filter and oil you will need to familiarize yourself with the car, where is the oil filter located and the oil pan? You will require a wrench and a screwdriver to remove the filter and also the nut on the bottom of the oil pan. Now that you know what tools are required and familiarized yourself with the vehicle you should use a drip pan that will collect all of the old oil that comes out (be sure to have the old oil properly disposed of). Make sure the engine is cold when draining the oil, you don’t want hot oil splashing all over the place. Once the oil is out replace the nut on the oil pan and then add the new oil filter. While adding the new oil filter you should be sure it is firmly attached then you can add the new oil. Prior to driving anywhere start the engine and check to ensure there is no oil leaking before you take the car out of the driveway.
